Junk drawers are not interesting in the same way Historical Markers are, nor do they speak of the same thing, but I appreciate photos of them in a similar way.

PS:CS3
I'll just copy what I wrote in my blog to here, because I think everyone should know about the CS3 beta.
Photoshop CS 3 is available for dowload. It is in Beta at the moment but will be out this spring. I just downloaded the 2 day beta (which can be cracked easily so you can keep if for good, suprise suprise), and I havn't gotten further than opening a raw image and.... oh man. Talk about refinements. I am capable of making my shot just about perfect now before even entering photoshop.

Considering this program will be our next 5 years or so, I suggest we all get to learning it as fast as possible. Proficient is a great thing to be early when it comes to Photoshop. Go get the beta folks!

Using the dialague box above you have increadible control of the tones in your shot.
Besides the Adobe Camera Raw 4.0 there is also a revised bridge, which is dark grey and very intuitive, it looks more customizable as well. I have noticed a new selection tool, and a "black and white" tab in the Image > Adjustments or Layer > New adjustment Layer paths. I'm sure there is much more.

Appropriation
The next assignment is to appropriate and recontextualize images. The link is to a short article about appropriation and Sherrie Levine, an artist who I will show in the next lecture.
The terms appropriate and recontextualize help to define Postmodernism in an art context.
Crit Monday March 26th.

14 Foot Waves
I'd suggest everyone brave the snow to go check out the lake this afternoon. The waves are huge and the lake is a warzone of chop. Waves this big rarely happen here and are worth the drive to see, even if you don't shoot, its worth seeing them smash the pier or the ice on shore.

Evoke
| 1. | to call up or produce (memories, feelings, etc.): to evoke a memory. |
| 2. | to elicit or draw forth: His comment evoked protests from the shocked listeners. |
| 3. | to call up; cause to appear; summon: to evoke a spirit from the dead. |
| 4. | to produce or suggest through artistry and imagination a vivid impression of reality: a short passage that manages to evoke the smells, colors, sounds, and shapes of that metropolis. |

New Assignment: Weather
I hate to use this expression but Think Outside the Box. If that does not work, get inside a box and make all of your images from inside that box. The challenge is to make images that evoke weather without taking pictures of, say, snow falling.
5 Prints due February 28. I will show a video of Roni Horn's work on Monday.

Since the theme of the semester is going to be InterOrbital Spacecraft I thought this local footage would be fitting.
